We believe in this and apply it to the innovations we are making to create the best-in-class Hippeastrum for our customers.
What we do
Hadeco is an international leader in the breeding, raising, growing and worldwide distribution of Hippeastrum bulbs.
Hadeco has an exclusive range of cultivars bred in-house specifically for pot culture. Our Hippeastrum has been bred to grow rapidly, whilst ensuring the full development of roots, stems and flowers. creating the fastest-growing, most reliable performers by far.
Through constant hybridisation and innovation, we ensure a regular supply of new, superior introductions to the marketplace.
Our breeding program
Our cultivars are healthy, trouble-free to force and have excellent resistance to disease. This has been made possible right from the start of our breeding program. Careful pairing of healthy parents in creating new hybrids and the strict selection and evaluation of new varieties ensure only strong cultivars enter multiplication.
A newly evolved hybrid undergoes strict evaluations for several years before being introduced into the commercial market and each of the available bulbs from Hadeco has passed intensive testing and critique and is around the vert best Hippeastrum cultivars in the world.
Pride in offering the highest quality possible is central to the Hadeco philosophy and we are excited to continue introducing exciting new cultivars in the coming years.

Farming for the future
Conventional farming strips nutrients and minerals from the soil meaning more fertilisers and chemicals are needed to keep the same results consistent year after year.
Hadeco is a proud member of Farming For The Future. Focusing on healthy soil allows us to have less water runoff, use fewer chemicals on our farms and help create healthy biodiversity around our farms in and above the soil.

Everything started from humble beginnings
Everything started from humble beginnings
When world peace was reestablished in 1945, two young Hollanders were finally able to realise a long-cherished dream – to settle in South Africa and grow fine flower bulbs.
Floor Barnhoorn and Harry de Leeuw were self-made men. Both had left school at the age of 14 to earn their livings by selling bulbs for growers. Their 18 hour days finished with evening classes in English and bookkeeping.
Keen, alert and full of drive, they brought their flower bulb expertise and newly acquired language and accounting skills to South Africa in 1946 and established the Company that is today known as Hadeco.
They first planted fast-growing gladioli for cut flowers and corms – to generate some much-needed cash flow, before branching out into other crops. The early days were not easy. The first bulb store was a secondhand army tent and staff sometimes had to wait patiently for their wages.
Floor looked after production and the nursery, while Harry travelled the country, towing an old caravan; gradually developing a market for flower bulbs, which were virtually unknown at the time.
Floor and Harry identified Hippeastrum as an important crop and concentrated much effort on hybridising vigorous cultivars specifically for potting. The hybrids they produced were soon recognised worldwide as exceptional.
The Future
Hadeco has grown into one of the largest flower bulb growers in the world, without losing sight of the original partners’ obsession with excellence, reliability of supply and genuine concern for customer satisfaction.
These values are an integral part of Hadeco’s culture. Efforts in hybridising and developing Hadeco amaryllis are always increasing and unparalleled elsewhere in the world.
Managed today by direct descendants of founder Floor Barnhoorn, Hadeco is an international leader in the breeding, raising, growing and worldwide distribution of flower bulbs, fresh cut flowers and laboratory-invitro produced plant material.
Our offering continues to be refined and improved and we are driven to provide our customers with the best in class flower bulbs and customer service.
